When data is inserted in a table, separate data parts are created, and each of them is lexicographically sorted by primary key. In the background, ClickHouse merges data parts for more efficient storage, similar to a Log-structured merge tree. Each part has its own primary index to allow efficient scanning and identification of where values lie within the parts.
